RapidAccess Medical Infusions

Our services

Antibiotic Infusions.

Prescribed IV antibiotics for infections that need treatment through a vein.

What are antibiotic infusions?

Antibiotic infusions deliver prescribed antibiotics directly into a vein. Your doctor may recommend intravenous (IV) treatment when an infection needs this route of treatment rather than tablets alone.

At RapidAccess Medical Infusions, your prescribed treatment is delivered in an outpatient clinic, with nursing support and monitoring throughout your appointment.

When might IV antibiotics be recommended?

Your GP, specialist or hospital team will decide whether your infection and overall health are suitable for outpatient treatment.

  • Selected skin, bone, joint or kidney infections requiring IV antibiotics.
  • Continuing a prescribed course after hospital discharge.
  • A treatment plan that includes repeated doses and clinical review.

Some infections require hospital care. An outpatient appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment if you are becoming more unwell.

Getting a referral and preparing for treatment

  • Referral and prescription

Your referral and antibiotic prescription, including the dose and schedule.

  • Test results and hospital notes

Relevant test results and your discharge summary, if you were treated in hospital.

  • Medicines and allergies

Details of allergies, current medicines and previous antibiotic reactions.

Confirm when your next dose is due and whether the clinic will supply the medicine or you need to bring it. Tell the team if your symptoms have changed since the referral.

    Receive treatment

The antibiotic is given through a suitable IV line, with monitoring during treatment.

  3. 03A patient drinking from a cup while seated in an infusion chair with a nurse nearby

    Monitoring and aftercare

Your nurse completes any required monitoring and explains your aftercare before you leave.

Side effects and risks

Side effects depend on the antibiotic. They can include nausea, diarrhoea, rash and irritation around the IV line. Serious allergic reactions can occur. Report any new symptoms during treatment; contact your doctor about severe or persistent diarrhoea or worsening infection symptoms.

After your treatment

Keep follow-up appointments and take any other prescribed medicines as directed. Do not stop or change your antibiotic course without advice. If an IV line remains in place between doses, follow the care instructions and report pain, redness, leakage or fever.

For severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse or swelling of the face or throat, call 000.

Common questions about antibiotic infusions

The medicine, dose and monitoring requirements determine the visit length. Confirm the expected time with our team.

Will I need daily appointments?

Some courses require repeated appointments. The frequency and total duration are set by your prescribing doctor.

Can I switch to tablets?

Your doctor decides when oral antibiotics are appropriate. The clinic will follow the prescribed plan.

What if I miss a dose?

Contact the clinic and your treating doctor promptly for advice. Do not change the schedule or double a dose yourself.

Can I attend if my symptoms are worse?

Contact your treating team before attending. Severe or rapidly worsening symptoms may need urgent hospital assessment.

How much will my treatment cost?

The Treatment cost card shows the treatment fee and any listed additional charges. Medication costs and concession availability vary by treatment.
